RESUMO

The aim of this study is to report a case in which a patient with nephrotic syndrome underwent surgery to remove fibrous gum tissue (ulectomy). An 8-year-old patient, diagnosed with early onset nephrotic syndrome due to a mutation in the NUP107 gene, had received a kidney transplant and was therefore taking various medications, including immunosuppressants. On oral examination, the patient was found to have a fibrous gingiva that was preventing the eruption of the upper permanent central incisors. A ulectomy was performed and the gingival tissue was sent for histopathological analysis, which showed normal aspects. The upper right central incisor was seen in the oral cavity 15 days after surgery. A second procedure was carried out to facilitate the eruption of the upper left incisor, which was visualized in the oral cavity 30 days later. In addition, oral manifestations such as maxillary atresia, ogival palate and mouth breathing were observed. Therefore, the role of the dental surgeon in the lives of transplanted children is considered important, as they often take various medications that can affect their oral health. Thus, early diagnosis and effective treatment will be essential to prevent future malocclusions and thus improve the quality of life of these patients.

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, submerged roots are found with high frequency, and their presence can change the planning of dental movements and implant placement. OBJECTIVES: To provide explanations of possible developments in the area involved, according to the evolutionary stage of the process, at the time of diagnosis. DISCUSSION: After atrophy of the periodontal ligament and epithelial remnants of Malassez, ankylosis of the bone with the submerged root occurs, and initiates a process of replacement resorption. Until this process reaches the most advanced stage, this area represents an increased "bone" density, and if some care is not taken, this can generate resorption problems in the tooth to be moved. Whereas implants can be placed, despite the presence of the submerged root, irrespective of the stage of evolution. CONCLUSION: It is natural for the onset of alveolodental ankylosis and tooth replacement resorption to occur in submerged roots, and its stage of evolution will be decisive in the approach to be adopted in clinical planning.

INTRODUCTION: Induced tooth-bone movement occurs by a synchronicity of dental and bone phenomena, thanks to the osteocytic network, which is a three-dimensional network that controls the bone shape or design. OBJECTIVE: To describe the tooth-bone movement induced by enhanced anchorage, divided into three distinct moments: zero, start and stop. QUESTION: From this description, the main question arises: with the use of mini-implants/miniplates, what changes in the biology of induced tooth-bone movement? The answer is: nothing changes, either biologically or microscopically. CONCLUSION: This technique optimizes the treatment time, and the range of therapeutic possibilities is broadened, thanks to the synchronicity of phenomena - which remain the same, in all teeth and bones, yet in a synchronized manner. Bone anchorage represents synchronicity in induced tooth-bone movement.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The evidence for any benefit of systemic antibiotic therapy on pulp survival following extrusive luxation and avulsion is inconclusive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic antibiotic therapy with amoxycillin and tetracycline for 7 days on different aspects of dental pulp repair in a murine model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The right maxillary incisor of 180 4 to 8-week-old male Wistar rats underwent extrusive luxation or avulsion. The animals were then treated with saline solution (control), tetracycline, or amoxicillin administered intra-gastrically for 7 days, and euthanized at 7, 15, and 30 days post-operatively. The layer of odontoblast cells, reparative dentin deposition, Hertwig's epithelial root sheath, pulp necrosis, and periapical inflammatory infiltrate were histomorphologically analyzed and scored. Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn tests were used to compare mean scores for the different procedures, treatments, and times (p ≤ .05). RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between luxated and avulsed teeth (p < .05). In luxated teeth, no differences were observed among treatments and times, except for more tertiary dentin deposition in the coronal third with the use of tetracycline compared with amoxicillin at 15 days (p < .05). In avulsed teeth, higher scores for the layer of odontoblast cells and lower scores for periapical inflammatory infiltrate at 7 days and pulp necrosis at 7 and 15 days were observed in the amoxicillin group compared to the saline and tetracycline groups (p < .05). At 30 days, however, no differences were observed among treatments. CONCLUSIONS: The use of systemic antibiotic therapy with tetracycline or amoxicillin for 7 days did not contribute to pulp repair following extrusive luxation or avulsion in rats. However, the results warrant further research into the use of amoxicillin for a more extended period of time in cases of avulsion.

JUSTIFICATION: Canines represent corners in the dental arch, and are important features in facial esthetics, as they support the upper lip, wing of the nose, and influence the nasolabial fold and the appearance of facial aging. In the laterality movements, the canines guidance coordinate the opening and closing of the teeth, saving the TMJ from sudden movements. DISCUSSION: As a result of the lack of eruption or the inadequate positioning of the maxillary canine, the loss of the laterality guide may occur, which will then occur in the maxillary lateral incisor, inducing lesions of "occlusal trauma", such as inflammatory root resorption. Likewise, without well positioned canines, there may be premature aging and change in facial esthetics. CONCLUSION: In order to avoid problems with eruption and positioning of the maxillary canines, early diagnosis is made by analyzing their position and their relationship with the other teeth, and in the three-dimensional context of the maxilla, between 8-10 years of age. Preventive measures can create bone space and direction so that the maxillary canines can occupy their position in the dental arch.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the subcutaneous connective tissue response of isogenic mice exposed to tricalcium silicate (Biodentine) and aggregated mineral trioxide (ProRoot MTA). A total of 120 mice were divided into 4 groups in 3 different experimental periods (7, 21 and 63 days): Biodentine; Pro-Root MTA; zinc oxide-eugenol and; Negative control - Sham. After the experimental periods microscopic descriptive, semi-quantitative and quantitative analysis of the inflammatory process were analyzed on H&E sections and evaluation of the gene expression of Il10, Infg, Il6, Il1r1 and Tnf (qRT-PCR) were performed. The data obtained were analyzed using the chi-square test and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Bonferroni post-test (5% significance level). Results: In the microscopic analysis, a slight inflammatory infiltrate was observed, with a predominance of sparse macrophages and polymorphonuclear cells, slight tissue fibrosis, regular fibrous capsule and with dystrophic calcifications, in all groups that received the materials (Biodentine and Pro-Root MTA). In parallel, all materials modulated the gene expression of the different cytokines and receptors evaluated. Conclusion: Pro-Root MTA and Biodentine showed a tissue compatibility, mediated inflammation, with increased fibrous tissue and production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Resumo Objetivo: Avaliar a resposta do tecido conjuntivo subcutâneo de camundongos isogênicos expostos à Biodentine™ e ao Trióxido Mineral Agregado (MTA). Métodos: Um total de 120 camundongos foram divididos em 4 grupos e 3 períodos experimentais diferentes (7, 21 e 63 dias): Biodentine™ (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fosses, França); Pro-Root MTA (Dentsplay, Tulsa, EUA); óxido de zinco eugenol (Biodinâmica Química e Farmacêutica LTDA., Ibiporã, PR - Brasil); e controle negativo - Sham. Após os períodos experimentais, análises microscópicas descritivas, semiquantitativas e quantitativas do processo inflamatório foram analisadas nos cortes de H&E e ainda, foi realizada a avaliação da expressão gênica de Il10, Infg, Il6, Il1r1 e Tnf (qRT-PCR). Os dados obtidos foram analisados por meio do teste do qui-quadrado e da análise de variância (ANOVA) two-way, seguido do pós-teste de Bonferroni (nível de significância de 5%). Resultados: Na análise microscópica observou-se discreto infiltrado inflamatório, com predomínio de macrófagos esparsos e polimorfonucleares, leve fibrose tecidual, cápsula fibrosa regular e com calcificações distróficas, em todos os grupos que receberam os materiais (Biodentine ™ e Pro-Root MTA). Paralelamente, todos os materiais modulam a expressão gênica das diferentes citocinas e receptores avaliados. Conclusão: Pro-Root MTA e Biodentine™ mostraram compatibilidade tecidual, inflamação mediada, com aumento do tecido fibroso e produção de citocinas pró- e antiinflamatórias.

RESUMO Introdução: A movimentação osseodentária induzida ocorre meio de uma sincronicidade de fenômenos dentários e ósseos, graças à rede osteocítica, uma rede tridimensional de controle do formato ou design ósseo. Objetivo: Descrever a movimentação osseodentária induzida com ancoragem ampliada, dividindo-a em três momentos distintos: zero, start e stop. Questionamento: Dessa descrição origina-se a principal pergunta: com o uso de mini-implantes/miniplacas, o que muda na biologia da movimentação osseodentária induzida? A resposta é: não muda nada, nem biologicamente, nem microscopicamente. Conclusão: O que se otimiza, com essa técnica, é o tempo de tratamento, e se amplia o leque de possibilidades terapêuticas, graças à sincronicidade dos fenômenos - que continuam sendo os mesmos, em todos os dentes e nos ossos, só que de forma sincronizada. A ancoragem óssea representa a sincronicidade na movimentação osseodentária induzida.

RESUMO Introdução: A frequência, na prática clínica, das raízes submersas é elevada, e sua presença pode modificar o planejamento de movimentações osteodentárias e da instalação de implantes. Objetivo: Apresentar as explicações das possíveis evoluções na área envolvida, de acordo com o estágio evolutivo do processo, no momento do diagnóstico. Discussão: Depois da atrofia do ligamento periodontal e dos restos epiteliais de Malassez, o osso anquilosa-se com a raiz submersa, e se inicia a reabsorção por substituição. Até se chegar ao estágio mais avançado, essa área representa uma densidade "óssea" aumentada, o que pode gerar problemas reabsortivos no dente a ser movimentado, caso alguns cuidados não sejam tomados. Por outro lado, os implantes podem ser aplicados, apesar da presença da raiz submersa, independentemente da fase evolutiva. Conclusão: É natural que, em raízes submersas, se instale a anquilose alveolodentária e a reabsorção dentária por substituição, e o seu estágio evolutivo será determinante na conduta a ser adotada no planejamento clínico.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of two radiographic images reveals two distinct, extreme situations of physiological tooth resorption, characteristic of primary teeth with or without permanent successor, due to partial anodontia. DISCUSSION: In all primary teeth, rhizolysis begins after the completion of formation, thanks to the apoptosis of their cells. When apoptosis induced by cementoblasts has denuded the root of these cells, the process of rhizolysis inevitably begins: This will be accelerated by mediators arising from the pericoronal follicle. When there is no permanent successor due to partial anodontia, rhizolysis occurs extremely slowly, and months later, without the epithelial rests of Malassez that were dead due to apoptosis, alveolodental ankylosis becomes established, and the tooth will gradually be replaced by bone, still within a physiological context. CONCLUSION: Rhizolysis and physiological tooth resorption may occur rapidly or slowly, early or late, and this depends on the presence of the permanent tooth, or its absence due to partial anodontia.

INTRODUCTION: Supernumerary teeth in cases of cleft lip and palate do not result from the division of normal germs before the formation of hard tissue. Deciduous and permanent teeth odontogenesis begins after the face has formed, either with or without the cleft. DISCUSSION: The most acceptable hypothesis to enable understanding of the presence of supernumerary teeth on one or both sides of the cleft palate is hyperactivity of the dental lamina in its walls. This hyperactivity, with the formation of more tooth germs, must be attributed to mediators and genes related to tooth formation, under strong influence of local epigenetic factors, whose developmental environment was affected by the presence of the cleft. CONCLUSION: The current concepts of embryology no longer support the fusion of embryonic processes for the formation of the face, but rather the leveling of the grooves between them. All human teeth have a dual embryonic origin, as they are composed of ectoderm and mesenchyme/ectomesenchyme, but this does not make it easy for them to be duplicated to form supernumerary teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The third molars are forgotten because they are the last in the dental arch, they do not directly influence the smile and they appear only in adolescence, when they do. OBJECTIVES: 1) to provide the clinician with a "checklist" to assess and diagnose changes to be screened in the third molar region in new patients; 2) to reveal the importance of not discharging the patient submitted to any dental treatment without first analyzing the third molars region clinically and on imaging examinations, since many diseases are associated to them. RESULT: A list of 10 situations that cover all diagnostic possibilities involving the third molars is presented. CONCLUSION: Adopting this protocol is a matter of habit, since the need is fundamental. The next professional assisting your patient may ask: "Did he not request examinations for the third molars?".

BACKGROUND: Bone demineralization has shown to be advantageous in autogenous onlay bone grafts and in pre-osteoblasts cultures, but such procedure has never been evaluated in particulate bone grafts. This study aimed to investigate the role of two demineralizing agents in the repair of the 8-mm critical-size defects in rats' calvaria. METHODS: Eighty adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of eight groups as follows: particulate autogenous bone demineralized with citric acid for 15 seconds (CA15), 30 seconds (CA30), or 60 seconds (CA60); particulate autogenous bone demineralized with tetracycline hydrochloride for 15 seconds (TCN15), 30 seconds (TCN30), or 60 seconds (TCN60); blood clot (NC), and non-demineralized autogenous bone (PC). The calvariae were harvested at 30 and 60 postoperative days (n = 5) for blinded histological and histometric analysis of the percentage area of newly formed bone within the defects. RESULTS: In the NC and TCN groups, bone formation was limited to the margins of the defects at 30 postoperative days, whereas complete closure was present in all the specimens from CA15 group. Both at 30 and 60 postoperative days, histomorphometry showed significant higher area of newly formed bone in specimens demineralized with CA than in those demineralized with TCN or non-demineralized (P < 0.05). TCN appeared to impair bone neoformation, as its use produced similar or inferior results compared to blood clot. CONCLUSIONS: Demineralization of particulate bone grafts with CA during 15s enhanced the regeneration of critical-size defects and may be a promising adjuvant in regenerative procedures. TCN seems to be improper for this purpose.

OBJECTIVE: Biologically explain some of the bone mechanisms involved in the intrusion, or intrusive effect, of teeth submitted to skeletal open bite correction using four miniplates. METHODS: The results of dental intrusion were measured and compared in 3D reconstructions of cone beam computed tomography scans taken before and after treatment of 20 patients with skeletal open bite, aged between 18 and 59 years. RESULTS: The results allow deducing that the compression and traction forces biologically promoted deformation or deflection of the osteocyte network that controls bone design, and these effects involved the external and internal surfaces of the bone, with the formation of new layers, including the cervical portion of the alveolar bone crest. This helps understanding how dental intrusion occurs in intrusive mechanics, whose forces are of inclination rather than intrusion. The root resorptions caused by the use of miniplates were insignificant, due to the more homogeneous distribution of forces in the several teeth simultaneously involved. CONCLUSION: Imaging studies in CT scans tend to capture in details the subperiosteal and endosteal phenomena of dental intrusion - before and after the application of intrusive mechanics -, in the form of a set of modifications called dental intrusion or intrusive effect .

The purpose of this study was to investigate the tissue reaction stimulated by BaSO4 - and Bi2 O3 -containing White MTA Angelus, in comparison with Bi2 O3 -containing white Portland cement, and white ProRoot MTA. Thirty-six adult male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus), weighing between 250 and 300 g, were distributed into three groups (n = 12) in accordance with the period of sacrifice (15, 30, and 60 days). Four polyethylene tubes filled with the tested cements were implanted into the dorsum of each rat. Lateral wall of the tubes served as the negative control. After the experimental periods, the animals were euthanized by overdose of pentobarbital anesthetic solution, and the specimens were prepared for microscopic analysis under ×50, ×100, and ×400 magnifications. Inflammatory scores (0-3) were used to grade the tissue reaction. Data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's test for individual comparisons (p < .05). A mild to moderate inflammatory tissue reaction was observed at the 15-day period, which decreased over the course of the periods for all cements, except for Portland cement. There was no significant difference among the tissue responses for ProRoot MTA, BaSO4 - and Bi2 O3 -containing White MTA Angelus at the 60-day period (p > .05). The Portland group had moderate inflammatory reaction at the final period of analysis, which was statistically different when compared to the other groups (p < .05). The microscopic findings of this animal study suggest that the addition of BaSO4 to White MTA Angelus does not hampers the biocompatibility of the cement.

BACKGROUND: Previous data suggest that bone demineralization may promote bone graft consolidation as well as proliferation and differentiation of pre-osteoblasts, but the biological mechanisms involved in this process need to be clarified. This study investigated the effects of bone demineralization with citric acid (CA) and tetracycline (TCN) on the repair of onlay bone grafts. METHODS: Onlay bone grafts were performed on the calvaria of 126 Wistar rats. The contacting surfaces between bone graft and receptor bone bed were demineralized for 15, 30, and 60 seconds with TCN (50 mg/mL), or 10% CA, (pH 1), constituting the following test groups (n = 18): TCN15, TCN30, TCN60, CA15, CA30, and CA60. Control grafts (C) were performed without demineralization (n = 18). After 7, 30, and 60 days, biopsies were obtained for quantitative and qualitative histological analysis (a = 6). RESULTS: Demineralization accelerated the bone repair early from 7 days of healing. Higher percentage area of newly formed bone was observed in CA15 and TCN60 groups when compared to C in all evaluation periods (P = 0.02). At 30 days, C specimens had lower percentage of consolidated surfaces than TCN60, TCN30 and CA15 (P = 0.0015). At 60 days, CA15, CA60, and TCN60 presented bone surfaces almost completely filled by newly formed bone, against about 75% in C specimens (P = 0.0015). CONCLUSIONS: Both CA and TCN were effective in accelerating osteogenesis at the interface between bone grafts and receptor bone beds, especially when applied for 15 seconds and 60 seconds, respectively.

ABSTRACT Objective: Biologically explain some of the bone mechanisms involved in the intrusion, or intrusive effect, of teeth submitted to skeletal open bite correction using four miniplates. Methods: The results of dental intrusion were measured and compared in 3D reconstructions of cone beam computed tomography scans taken before and after treatment of 20 patients with skeletal open bite, aged between 18 and 59 years. Results: The results allow deducing that the compression and traction forces biologically promoted deformation or deflection of the osteocyte network that controls bone design, and these effects involved the external and internal surfaces of the bone, with the formation of new layers, including the cervical portion of the alveolar bone crest. This helps understanding how dental intrusion occurs in intrusive mechanics, whose forces are of inclination rather than intrusion. The root resorptions caused by the use of miniplates were insignificant, due to the more homogeneous distribution of forces in the several teeth simultaneously involved. Conclusion: Imaging studies in CT scans tend to capture in details the subperiosteal and endosteal phenomena of dental intrusion - before and after the application of intrusive mechanics -, in the form of a set of modifications called dental intrusion or intrusive effect .


RESUMO Objetivo: Explicar, biologicamente, alguns dos mecanismos ósseos envolvidos na intrusão, ou efeito intrusivo, de dentes submetidos à correção da mordida aberta esquelética por meio do uso de quatro miniplacas. Métodos: Foram mensurados, em reconstruções 3D de tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico, os resultados da intrusão dentária, comparando-se o antes e o depois em 20 pacientes com mordida aberta esquelética, com idades entre 18 e 59 anos. Resultados: Os resultados permitem deduzir que as forças de compressão e de tração promovem, biologicamente, deformação ou deflexão da rede osteocítica controladora do design ósseo, e esses efeitos envolvem as superfícies externas e internas do osso, com formação de novas camadas, incluindo a parte cervical da crista óssea alveolar. Isso ajuda a compreender como ocorre a intrusão dentária nas mecânicas intrusivas cujas forças são de inclinação, e não de intrusão. As reabsorções radiculares promovidas pelo uso de miniplacas são insignificantes, em função da distribuição mais homogênea das forças nos vários dentes simultaneamente envolvidos. Conclusão: Os estudos imagiológicos tendem a captar, nas tomografias, cada vez mais detalhadamente os fenômenos subperiosteais e endosteais da intrusão dentária nos pacientes - antes e depois da aplicação das mecânicas intrusivas -, na forma de um conjunto de modificações que se chama intrusão dentária ou efeito intrusivo.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Supernumerary teeth in cases of cleft lip and palate do not result from the division of normal germs before the formation of hard tissue. Deciduous and permanent teeth odontogenesis begins after the face has formed, either with or without the cleft. Discussion: The most acceptable hypothesis to enable understanding of the presence of supernumerary teeth on one or both sides of the cleft palate is hyperactivity of the dental lamina in its walls. This hyperactivity, with the formation of more tooth germs, must be attributed to mediators and genes related to tooth formation, under strong influence of local epigenetic factors, whose developmental environment was affected by the presence of the cleft. Conclusion: The current concepts of embryology no longer support the fusion of embryonic processes for the formation of the face, but rather the leveling of the grooves between them. All human teeth have a dual embryonic origin, as they are composed of ectoderm and mesenchyme/ectomesenchyme, but this does not make it easy for them to be duplicated to form supernumerary teeth.


RESUMO Introdução: Os dentes extranumerários nas fissuras labiopalatinas não são resultado da divisão dos germes normais antes da formação do tecido duro. A odontogênese dos decíduos e permanentes inicia-se depois de formada a face, com ou sem fissuras. Discussão: A hipótese mais plausível para compreender a presença dos dentes extranumerários em um ou nos dois lados da fissura labiopalatina é a hiperatividade da lâmina dentária em suas paredes. Essa hiperatividade, com formação de mais germes dentários, deve ser atribuída aos mediadores e genes relacionados à formação dos dentes, sob forte influência de fatores epigenéticos locais, cujo ambiente de desenvolvimento foi afetado pela presença da fissura. Conclusão: Os conceitos atuais da embriologia não fundamentam mais a fusão de processos embrionários para a formação da face, e sim o nivelamento dos sulcos entre eles. Todos os dentes humanos têm uma dupla origem embrionária, pois se compõem de ectoderma e mesênquima/ectomesênquima, mas isso não facilita sua duplicação para formar dentes extranumerários.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the subcutaneous tissue response after different protocols to photodynamic therapy (PDT). In Phase 1, were tested the diode laser (used for 1min) associated to the photosensitizer phenothiazine chloride solution (PCS) in different concentrations. In Phase 2 ­ the diode laser and LED were tested associated to two different photosensitizers, PCS and Curcumin, in different exposure times of light application. Material and Methods: After 7, 21 and 63-days the animals were euthanized and the subcutaneous tissue processed to histological analysis. Qualitative and semi-quantitative descriptions of the inflammatory process and immunohistochemical technique were performed. The obtained data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's post-test (α= 0.5). Results: On Phase 1, the tissue response was very similar among the groups. For the inflammatory infiltrate, PCS with concentration of 10mg/mL exhibited the most intense reaction (p > 0.05). On Phase 2, at 7-days period, the analyzed parameters presented small magnitude and after 21 and 63-days, all the parameters demonstrated tissue compatibility. Conclusion: Both photosensitizers presented proper tissue compatibility regardless the different concentrations used on Phase 1 and different durations of light exposure on Phase 2 (AU)


Objetivo: Este estudo avaliou a resposta do tecido subcutâneo após terapia fotodinâmica, utilizando na Fase 1 - laser diodo por 1min e solução fotossensibilizadora de cloreto de fenotiazina (CF) em diferentes concentrações e Fase 2 - laser diodo e LED e dois fotossensibilizadores, CF e Curcumina, em diferentes tempos de exposição da aplicação de luz. Material e Métodos: Após 7, 21 e 63 dias, foram realizadas descrições qualitativas e semiquantitativas do processo inflamatório e técnica de imunoistoquímica. Os dados foram analisados pelo pós-teste de Kruskal-Wallis e Dunn (α = 0,5). Resultados: Na Fase 1, a resposta do tecido foi muito semelhante. O infiltrado inflamatório, na concentração de 10 mg / mL, exibiu reação mais intensa (p > 0,05). Na Fase 2, aos 7 dias, os parâmetros analisados apresentaram pequena magnitude. Aos 21 e 63 dias, todos os parâmetros demonstraram compatibilidade com o tecido. Conclusão: Ambos os fotossensibilizadores apresentaram compatibilidade de tecido adequada, independentemente das diferentes concentrações utilizadas na Fase 1 e diferentes durações de exposição à luz na Fase 2 (AU)

ABSTRACT Introduction: The third molars are forgotten because they are the last in the dental arch, they do not directly influence the smile and they appear only in adolescence, when they do. Objectives: 1) to provide the clinician with a "checklist" to assess and diagnose changes to be screened in the third molar region in new patients; 2) to reveal the importance of not discharging the patient submitted to any dental treatment without first analyzing the third molars region clinically and on imaging examinations, since many diseases are associated to them. Result: A list of 10 situations that cover all diagnostic possibilities involving the third molars is presented. Conclusion: Adopting this protocol is a matter of habit, since the need is fundamental. The next professional assisting your patient may ask: "Did he not request examinations for the third molars?".


RESUMO Introdução: Os terceiros molares são esquecidos por serem os últimos dentes na arcada dentária, por não influenciarem diretamente no sorriso e por aparecerem apenas na adolescência - quando aparecem. Objetivos: 1) Fornecer ao clínico um checklist de conferência e diagnóstico de alterações a serem checadas na região dos terceiros molares em novos pacientes; e 2) Destacar a importância de não dar alta ao paciente submetido a qualquer tratamento odontológico sem antes analisar, clínica e imagiologicamente, a região dos terceiros molares, pois muitas doenças estão a eles associadas. Resultado: Criou-se uma lista de 10 situações que englobam todas as possibilidades diagnósticas envolvendo os terceiros molares. Conclusão: Adotar esse protocolo é uma questão de hábito, pois a necessidade é imperiosa. O próximo profissional a atender o seu paciente vai perguntar: "Ele não solicitou exames para os terceiros molares?".
